My first ever music video, and one that it’s been very interesting to revisit after all these years while putting this website together. Keeping a straightforward performance video visually interesting enough to hold the viewer’s attention for the duration of the track is always something of a challenge, even more so when the track is a hypnotic, six-minute long funk piece. Credit where it’s due, the reason this works at all is down in no small part to the exceptional editing done by both Conor Barry and James McDonnell. The original concept behind the piece was to try and evoke the chiaroscuro, monochromatic tone of old Blue Note album covers, in vein of John Coltrane or Art Blakey, and I feel Barry and McDonnell did an extraordinary job in not only capturing this aesthetic, but lovingly imbuing it with a sense of pace and movement.
