One of the most interesting challenges I often face is marketing to marketers. It’s a task akin to getting a laugh out of a world-weary comedian; they’ve heard all the best lines, they know where every set-up is inevitably headed. More than that, they know precisely what you’re doing, and they’ll be far and away your most critical audience if a bit doesn’t land. More than any audience, you need to cut through the cynicism, and actually, truly, “surprise and delight”.

When asked by Pinterest to show advertisers why their platform represented a unique opportunity to reach a receptive audience, we wanted to leverage ‘Pinterest Predicts’, their uncannily-accurate annual forecast of the coming year’s major trends. How better to showcase Pinterest’s powers of cultural prognostication than a tarot-themed experiential dinner, in which your small plate tasting menu was selected for you by the cards themselves?

Our work at OMR included stage and spatial design, and even a bespoke Pinterest-themed interactive gameshow. The highlight for me, however, was the multi-sensory dining experience designed for VVIPs.

Once seated, diners had their Tarot cards read, with each card drawn corresponding to a predicted trend for the following year, and a small plate themed around that trend. It was a fusion between immersive theatre and highly conceptual food design, and managed to pique the curiosity of even the most jaded industry veteran.
